Coco was born in 1883 in a hospice for poor people in France. Her name was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. Why Coco then? Before becoming a designer she was a singer in one of the most popular cafés in Paris, where she used to sing the song “Qui qu’a vu Coco”
Many filmmakers were interested in Coco Chanel and that she would make dresses for the stars. The designer made an agreement with Samuel Goldwin, by which she agreed to travel twice a year to Hollywood to make the dresses for stars like Gloria Swanson. But the agreement did not last too long because for Coco Chanel Hollywood was, in her own words “the capital city of bad taste”.
Coco Chanel was the first designer to release her own perfume. It was created by Ernest Beaux, to whom she asked a “perfume with the fragrance of a woman” and “artificial as a dress”. This way, Chanel Nº5 was the first perfume of history, that not only contained natural fragrances but also synthetic fragrances.
When Coco Chanel was not yet a famous designer, the vast majority of women would wear clothes made with exotic and very expensive fabrics. But Coco Chanel was always ahead of her time, she was the first to wear a sweater, an item then only used by men. This gesture caused a controversy on the fashion world.
The first job of Coco Chanel in the fashion industry was as an assistant in a couture atelier. As designer her first job was to hat designer, one of her rich lovers opened her first hat store. Not long after Coco began with clothes design.
